Top Choking Hazards for Toddlers
Know the enemies. These cause the most choking incidents in kids under 4:
Food:Ā Whole grapes, hot dogs, popcorn, hard candy, nuts, raw carrots, chunks of cheese, spoonfuls of peanut butter, marshmallows
Non-food:Ā Coins, button batteries, small toy parts, marbles, pen caps, balloons (latex), magnets

Quick prevention rules:
- Cut grapes lengthwise into quarters ā never whole
- Slice hot dogs into strips, then small pieces ā never rounds
- No popcorn, nuts, or hard candy until age 4+
- Always sit down while eating ā no walking, running, or playing
- If it fits through a toilet paper roll, it's a choking hazard
What to Do When Your Toddler Is Choking (Step by Step)
If your child CAN cough or cry:Ā Let them cough. Don't interfere ā their body is clearing it.
If your child CANNOT cough, cry, or breathe:
- Call 911Ā (or have someone call while you act)
- Under 1 year:Ā 5 back blows (face down on forearm) ā 5 chest thrusts
- Over 1 year:Ā 5 back blows ā 5 abdominal thrusts (Heimlich)
- If traditional methods fail:Ā Use your anti-choking device
- If child goes unconscious:Ā Start CPR immediately
Key point: The Heimlich maneuver fails 1 in 4 times. An anti-choking device isn't optional ā it's as essential as a car seat or baby gate. Learn the skills AND have the device ready.
